Are you an experienced VAT or indirect tax compliance professional looking for a role where you can take genuine end to end ownership, rather than just being one part of a bigger process? A well established international law firm is expanding its London based indirect tax operations capability, and is looking for a VAT Manager to take charge of its day to day compliance activity across multiple jurisdictions.

The Role

Reporting to the Indirect Tax Operations Manager, the VAT Manager will own the day to day delivery of the firm's indirect tax compliance activities across multiple jurisdictions, including Europe, Asia Pacific, and the Middle East. This is a hands on role with real scope for ownership, sitting within a growing Indirect Tax Operations Team and working closely with Finance, Billing, Accounting, Accounts Payable, Financial Systems, local office personnel, and external advisors. You will also supervise and develop a VAT Analyst, giving you a genuine management dimension alongside the technical work. Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing preparation, review, and submission of VAT/GST returns across applicable jurisdictions.
  • Managing European Sales Listings, Intrastat filings, and other periodic indirect tax reporting obligations.
  • Owning the firm's VAT compliance calendar and ensuring filing deadlines and submission requirements are met.
  • Reviewing supporting workpapers, account reconciliations, data extracts, and compliance documentation prepared by the VAT Analyst or external advisors.
  • Monitoring VAT legislative and administrative developments and coordinating implementation of required filing or process updates.
  • Managing recurring interactions with external VAT advisors and service providers, and coordinating responses to tax authority inquiries and VAT audits.
  • Leading, supervising, and mentoring the VAT Analyst, setting priorities and delivering technical coaching on filings, reconciliations, and documentation.
  • Supporting e invoicing and real time reporting initiatives, and contributing to process documentation, compliance playbooks, and control improvements.
  • Supporting VAT registrations, deregistrations, and changes to existing registrations as the firm's obligations evolve.
The Candidate
We are looking for someone with:
  • 8+ years of VAT or indirect tax compliance experience, ideally within a multinational organisation, professional services firm, or law firm environment.
  • Strong practical knowledge of VAT/GST returns, European Sales Listings, Intrastat reporting, VAT registrations, and related compliance requirements.
  • Experience managing multi jurisdictional filing obligations and advisor relationships.
  • Experience supporting VAT audits, tax authority inquiries, or compliance reviews.
  • Strong Excel and data management skills, and comfort working with large datasets and reconciliations.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and competing priorities across jurisdictions.
  • A proactive and solutions oriented approach, with the confidence to take ownership of day to day compliance activities and drive issues through to resolution.
  • The ability to supervise and develop less experienced team members.
  • Interest in e invoicing, tax technology, automation, and process improvement initiatives.
  • ATT, CTA, ACA, ACCA, or equivalent qualification, or progress toward qualification, is preferred but not essential.
