A well-regarded law firm is looking to appoint an experienced Senior Legal Cashier to join its London finance team. This is a hands-on role for someone who thrives in a busy legal practice environment, is fully conversant with the SRA Accounts Rules, and brings strong technical cashiering capability alongside a proactive, team-first approach.
You’ll be working alongside two other Senior Cashiers and reporting into the Head of Finance & Ops. The core objective of the team is to ensure prompt month-end billing and cash collection, while adhering to the SRA Accounts Rules and Code of Conduct, and responding quickly to internal and external queries (with strict SLAs in place).
Key responsibilities include:
- Daily bank reconciliations and Client-to-Office transfers
- Month-end bank reconciliations for Client and Office accounts
- Supporting credit control activity (daily where needed), escalating problem accounts appropriately
- Reconciliation of client monies held on account
- Posting and recharging client disbursements, and settling disbursements once funds are received
- Daily and month-end reconciliation of credit card spend and raising bills to recharge to clients (including managing credits/refunds as received)
- Processing quarterly payments including VAT, CT61 and CT in advance
- Taking phone payments and dealing with client queries as required
- Supporting fee earners and support staff with finance queries and process guidance
- Supporting month-end billing (key priority, with a target close of 6 working days post month-end, reducing to 4 by year-end)
- Supporting the purchase ledger, including coding supplier invoices to correct nominals/branches
- Supporting with petty cash reconciliation
- Processing, posting and payment of employee expenses
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in a similar legal cashiering role
- Strong knowledge of the SRA Accounts Rules, regulations and AML controls
- Solid understanding of double-entry bookkeeping with exceptional attention to detail
- A finance qualification (e.g., ILFM Dip / AILFM or similar)
- Proven resilience and the ability to thrive in a high-pressure environment (especially around month-end)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with professionalism and discretion handling confidential information
- Excellent organisational/prioritisation skills and a flexible, “can-do” mindset
- Confidence working independently and as part of a team
- Strong Microsoft Office skills (Excel is crucial) and experience with legal finance software
