Finance Assistant – London

A leading international law firm is hiring a Finance Assistant into its London team. This is the sort of role where you don’t get boxed into one corner of finance—instead, you’ll learn how a high-performing professional services finance function really runs, end to end.

From day one you’ll sit within a close-knit team, working under the guidance of a Finance Supervisor and International Controller. The expectation isn’t that you arrive knowing everything; it’s that you’re curious, organised, and keen to develop.

With structured exposure over time, you’ll build capability across accounts payable, banking, cash application, client/trust, VAT and reporting, while learning how compliance works in a regulated legal environment (including HMRC VAT requirements and Solicitors Accounts Rules).

What makes this role attractive is the variety. One week you might be supporting invoice and expense processing through Chrome River and helping keep key supplier reconciliations tidy; the next you could be assisting with client/trust movements, researching receipts, allocating payments to the right matters, or helping pull documentation together for audit requirements. You’ll also get involved in monthly reviews and reconciliations, and contribute to improvement projects as the team streamlines processes.

Rather than a long list of duties, the day-to-day can be summed up like this:
  • Keep things moving: help ensure invoices, expenses and payments are processed accurately and on time.
  • Support the client money process: assist with cash allocation, client/trust activity, and the correct treatment of unidentified funds.
  • Stay audit-ready: help collate information and documents to support annual compliance/audit activity.
  • Get exposure to reporting: support VAT returns, bank recs and wider statutory / KYC information gathering as needed.

This role would suit you if:

You’ve recently completed a finance apprenticeship or you’re looking for your first “proper” finance role in a professional environment, and you want a position that will genuinely develop you.

You’ll need a solid foundation (GCSEs including Maths and English or equivalent), strong written and verbal communication, and the ability to juggle multiple tasks with attention to detail and deadlines.

You should also be comfortable with systems—particularly Excel and the usual Microsoft tools—and happy working both independently and as part of a team.

If you’re looking for a role where you can learn quickly, build credibility, and gain exposure to the core finance engine of a major law firm, this is a strong move.

We are an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion. We welcome applications from candidates of all backgrounds, experiences and characteristics.
